MCCM Architects, in association with Clark
Condon Associates, was responsible for the architectural
elements of this extensive renovation project located
in a predominately Hispanic community north of Houstons
central business district. The design concept for the
concession facility, swim facility and shelters was
derived from simples shapes and bold colors reminiscent
of contemporary Hispanic architecture. Masonry and stucco
painted with high-build acrylic coatings were chosen
because of their durability, color and ability to be
easily repaired and refinished in the event of vandalism.
The concession building has top-hinged panels that open
up when in use to provide sun and rain protection to
the concession openings. The swim facility includes
restrooms for men and women, life guard office, control
station, pool equipment rooms, storage for pool accessories,
a 25 meter competition pool with separate area for a
water slide, 12-inch deep toddler pool with water sprays,
and shade structures. A large covered porch
on the entrance side of the swim facility, outside the
pool enclosure, provides protection from sun and rain
for swimmers and non-swimmers and opens onto a paved
sculpture court which, together with the porch, can
be used for multiple non-swimming functions in the park.
The swim facility restrooms are designed to be accessible
from outside the pool enclosure when the pool is closed.
